The Bauxite Mine is a former field of mining, with a pond in its deepest part. The colour of the water creates an incredible contrast with the rocky walls that surround it.

The pond was formed throughout the years when the mine was abandoned, due to infiltration from groundwater present in Karstic terrain. Its very intense red colour derives from the presence of bauxite residuals in the mine, which are also visible in the surrounding area.

It is situated close to the lighthouse of Punta Palascia and Monte Sant’Angelo, a few kilometres south of Otranto, in the direction of the Bosco Le Orte. The site is an open-air mine and can be visited freely.
